Telenovelas and stuff

I’ve never been much for watching TV, I’d guess that my usual time spent there ranged from 0 to half an hour a week. That is, until I got hooked on the telenovela Soy Tu Dueña. Now, I’m irritable if I can’t get home to watch it every weeknight at 9pm. I consider it Spanish practice, sounds good eh? It does motivate me to try and understand because I want to know what is happening. One thing I’ve discovered is that if I just relax and watch it I seem to know what is being said but if I try and translate it then I get lost. This jibes with some of the language learning stuff I’ve read, translating is not the way to go. I also go searching online and read whatever I can find about each days program. That can be frustrating too though because I’ve found that the synopsis online are just the first part of the episode. They seem to ignore the end of each show.

I guess I’ve started down the road to TV addiction because I found myself joining Mimi in watching a marathon of this really disturbing show. It’s called Hoarders. OMFG! Seriously disturbing and we sat one night and watched like 8 episodes back to back. That night I had dreams of stuff overwhelming me and George Carlin laughing at me. It was like watching a train wreck, I wanted to walk away but I was mesmerized by these lives that were submerged in junk. Mimi and I have vowed to clean out the office and I’m now really manic about everything getting put in its place. I kept wanting to just slap these silly people upside the head and say “throw all that shit out”. Yeah, I’m sure it is some kind of disease but really, it’s not so much hoarding stuff as being incapable of cleaning up your house. I had a tenant like that once, I didn’t know there was a name for it but it was horrendous getting her moved out and then cleaning the place. Did I mention she also had 11 cats and only small paths through all the junk and no cat boxes? It seems that many of these people are animal hoarders too. The sad part is the kids forced to live in it. Argh! I’m still trying to get over watching that.

Back to thinking about Valentina…

Thin edge of the wedge is what it sounds like to me……………and I bet Mimi has at least six of those hoarded away in the aquarium we like to call your garage! Viva Coronation Street !

  • Valentina has very nice looking skin. And a lot of it is showing. Which is very pleasing to me!

Your novela addiction has a positive side: I became a fluent Spanish speaker watching them starting back in the late ’70′s (Angélica María–people said I looked just like her). I am, also (unfortunately), a first-rate “novelera” to this day. My amigas mexicanas make fun of me, while, at the same time they shoo their husbands away from the remote control, take over the television, and join me on the sofa. “Soy tu dueña” starts June 1 up here in the USA and I am a big Lucero fan. Won’t be missing this one!

  • Jonna, you are becoming more Mexican! Not such a bad thing!

I love novelas! I started watching them in high school (to help me learn Spanish ;-) ), and I haven’t stopped since. I do think they have helped my Spanish, but I’m completely addicted.

  • Amiga – We are in agreement. Lucero is a babe! As to your novella watching – What can I say I watch golf and futbol – go for it!

Wheee….there are some hunka, hunka, hunkas in that show. When does it come on here? Who cares about language!

What channel does this air on at 9pm?

Hoarders is like crack. My daughter and I watch it religiously, gasping and groaning. And one thing I’ve noticed: a LOT of the hoarders featured in the show live in Washington State.

Once upon a time I had boobs like that. Now they’re in a race to see which one reaches my waist first (sigh).*

*I think Maya Angelou said that first.

Like Stephen and Paula, I have been hopelessly addicted to Coronation Street for years. I have cleared out my DVR so it can record everything when I’m away next week.

  • You will learn a ton of Spanish. I started many moons ago with Rosa Salvaje, starring Veronica Castro. Enjoy!

  • I do hope that watching telenovelas helps my Spanish, but the incredible hacienda, the beautiful people and the heavy drama don’t hurt. I think I’d watch it even if I didn’t understand anything.

Leslie, I watch it over the air (antenna) and it is on channel 9 Televisa. I don’t know what channel it is on cable.

Hi, just stumbled upon your blog looking for info on StDuena. I think it’s amazing that you are able to learn Spanish watching this great novela. I have been watching novelas since I was little. First saw Lucero in Chispita her first novela when she was a kid. I loveeee how she acts and she is also an excelent singer. Colunga is so freaking fine in this novela I have to keep watching even though it’s a remake and the original was awsome too. Enjoy the rest of the novela you will love it. Univision is showing it at 9 pm eastern time. Maribel
