Macho Man
There’s an old man who begs on a corner I pass many times a week. He’s bent and stooped and has a cane and an old plastic chair that he sits in when the light is green. When it is red, he walks along the stopped cars, slowly and off balance and asks for money.
I usually give him 5 pesos every week or so, and just wave him off in between. The other day, I gave him the 5 pesos and he looks up at me kind of sideways because his back is so crooked. I expected a polite gracias but what I got was a leering
Gracias, ¡MAMACITA!
I was so shocked that I answered in English, No! You didn’t just say that! Then, the light turned green and I drove off. Now, I’m not sure whether to give him another 5p someday or not. Maybe I should give him 10p?

You obviously still have “it” Jonna………..what a waste !!!
Very cute post, you made my day.
I asked Miguel about this and he feels it was not offensive (only another Mexican would know, right?). And he says that you should give whatever is in your heart to give, there is no obligation. Give what you want to give and feel good about that, and if he continues to seem rude, then stop giving him anything (although keep in mind the old guy might not be right in his head, and not really know what he’s saying).
Anyway, thanks for the chuckle, Mamacita Jonna.
That’s funny, Mamasita. I say up him to ten pesos. He has used the money to have his eyes fixed! And you are looking mighty fine to him….what a compliment.
Hmmm… looked up “mamacita”. After scrolling through the photos of the hot babes with big butts in little white thongs, I came across one of the meanings of ‘mamacita’ in the Urban Dictionary, “really sexy Mexican babe” (or something like that). Mimi, I think you better get home quick! ;^)
I want the blog name changed to blah…blah…blah…Mamacita!
I think you take it as a compliment, and contiue with your routine!
abrazos mamacita!
Debi
Oh, I LOVE blah…blah…blah…MAMACITA!!
When the bus driver was ranting at me, he was calling me the same thing and all I could think of was the I Love Lucy episode when Ricky’s mom comes to visit (from Cuba) and Lucy calls her “mamacita” constantly.
Obviously, you’ve got it!
OMG! The punch had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes! By all means, give him ten!
Well this turned into an education for me. It is all in how you look at things.
Stay with $5MN. If you up it to $10MN, you’ll end up having to call him “Papacito.”
I vote for upping him to 10 pesos! That’s less than one US and I’m sure this poor old guy would rather make a living other than begging pesos from mamacitas!
I, too, vote for changing the name of your blog to “blah, blah, blah, mamacita”. And, if you do so, give the old boy a one-time bonus for his creativity!
