I think not

I think not

We had our first car towed from in front of our driveway yesterday. I spent many years in San Francisco where this is at least a weekly occurrence, daily in some areas. I’ve been avoiding it, I don’t want to alienate my neighbors or give anyone a reason for retaliation. So, when someone is parked there, we go out and canvas the neighborhood to see if anyone knows the car.

Yesterday, Mimi had a bunch of errands to run and at 11am this jeep was blocking our exit. The truck is in the shop so the only car she had available was in the garage. She made the usual rounds, the doctors office 2 doors down, the attorney 3 doors down, Concha across the street… no one claimed it. She came back in and did something else.

At 3pm when it was still there, enough was enough. Clearly whoever it was had parked their fairly new, fairly expensive car and gone off to work or somewhere for the whole day. So, I called the cops.

Amazingly, one was here within about 5 minutes. He took the info, asked if we had inquired with the neighbors and called a tow truck. He then stayed until it came and he and the tow truck driver pushed the car back enough so Mimi could get out. Then, they towed that puppy away!

Oh, he did ask me about the writing on the windshield and the side windows. It seems someone had written some very polite admonishments in magic marker on the windows. I pointed out that none of the writing was on the paint job, it could all be cleaned off easily. He said, ‘you wrote it?’, I said ‘maybe’, he smiled and that was that.

We locked up carefully when we left and told Cuba to bark like hell if she heard anything.  No retribution to the house when we got back from the vet so let’s hope whoever just learned a lesson. I’m thinking that my expectations from San Francisco of confrontations, retribution, and sometimes real injuries are not the norm here in Mérida – I’m so glad I got out of that dangerous country up north.

  • We have some kind of “church” a few houses down that rants and raves, screams and plays loud music every Sunday and Wednesday evening. They do all of this in the back of a house, so it is loud. I call the cops every night they get out of control—which is just about every Sunday and Wednesday. I had the same fears of retribution, but nothing so far. We have become friends with the neighborhood cops, they smile, wave and stop by to pet the poodle. Whenever they come to the “church” the commotion stops. I just wish they could stop it from starting!

I admire your fortitude in waiting so long to call the cops. Here on the island they would not tow the thing. They would take the licence plates and charge the owner a fine to get them back. Meanwhile, you are still stuck in your garage!
