About the time we were packed and ready to drive off to Akumal this afternoon, a huge wind came up, the temps dropped about 20 degrees and it began to rain. Really rain, not just drizzle. All the plants in the pond blew over, branches were flying around and water was pouring down.
Ah well, it’s just rain we thought and off we went. It took us an hour to get out of the city, seriously. Traffic was a mess, it was rush hour, streets were flooded.
As we got closer to the periférico we saw buses and cars driving on the wrong side of the divided road, then we saw them driving over the dividers… hmmm.
A large tree was down over the road, we got around that one and then came on another one.
Once we got on the Cancun road, there were huge billboards down on top of cars and lots more uprooted trees. We could see the that we were following the storm.
I looked at Mimi and said “maybe we should turn around and try this tomorrow”.
If the storm hit the Cobá road ahead of us with that strength, many trees would be down and by the time we got there it would be dark, it was pouring rain, people were sliding around on the road – it just wasn’t worth it.
So, after talking with the Brits driving behind us, we all turned around and came home. The animals were very confused. All that prep and everyone in the cars and then we end up back at the house?
It was probably good as when we got home we discovered that the wind had blown open the back door and blown a picture off the wall in the kitchen, it would have been open all weekend.
We went out to dinner at Rescoldos a new Mediterranean place here in Centro with a wood pizza oven and great food. We’d all been wanting to try it anyway and it was fantastic.
Tomorrow is another day. We plan to start early and get to Playa in time for my noon dentist appt.

I wondered if you were going to still leave with the storm. If the only thing affected by the rain was a door, then you are good to go. It was quite a humdinger of a rainstorm, brief but fierce.

Theresa
wow,and we’re still waiting for the rains here..go figure.
When it rains, it pours!!! LOL – that is certainly the case in Mexico! Good decision to turn around
Jonna & Mimi,
I hope you are looking into what is up with your locks on those doors. You need to be able to feel secure when you leave or are sleeping…and those of us who care for you would like to be able to feel secure for you!
Nancy
Am sure you are enjoying your days at the beach. Thought this might help you appreciate it just a bit more.

…and if you are star gazing – here’s “shooting stars” explained.

I’ve heard rumors that a tornado hit Merida. Some say it was in Por Esto but I didn’t see anything about it.
First off, about the door. I don’t think the bars that go up and down into the door frame were secured on half the door. So, when the wind blew hard, it rocked the double doors back and forth until they opened. In other words, it was probably human error
We will definitely keep an eye on it though, I appreciate the concern.
Second, Yay! The rains do seem to be here, on time and in strength. We got back to Mérida yesterday and it rained heavily both last night and this afternoon.
Mic, those 2 links are hysterical. I’ll never look at a shooting star the same.
Wayne, I also heard that a tornado touched down. It was certainly a ferocious wind. Who knew that happened here?
I’m working on some posts and albums from this weekend, it was fantastic!
