Flowering trees of Mérida

I took pictures today of the incredible Flamboyán (Delonix regia) and Lluvia de Oro (Cassia fistula) trees in bloom on all the streets of the city. The Flamboyán is known in English as the Royal Poinciana and the Lluvia de Oro as the Golden Shower tree, both are tropical and only survive in zones 10 and 11. They are commonly used as street trees here and in many tropical areas even though they are famous for breaking up sidewalks with their shallow roots. Driving down a street shaded by brilliant red/orange and dripping yellow with the ground covered in dropped blooms is an incredible thing, it takes my breath away.

  • Great photos amiga! The flamboyán are flamboyant here right now too.

Clever of one of your readers to notice this is your Blog. I think the issue of layers (pages underneath pages) to get to the point of something is what we are talking about here – retired or not. There are the web pages where you get an ad in between the information with an option to bypass if you desire (no- I want to wait and read the useless ad).

While I know this is your Blog. This space is for my comments. Trust that I will return to your Blog whatever the format. I can live with a teaser or two.

  • Golden Shower. I often wondered what the yellow-blossom trees were called. Now I know. Thanks.

Jonna, now I am breathless too…thanks for sharing these photos with us…

  • We have lluvia de oro here in Morelia, too. And the tree known as flamboyán in your part of the world is known as tabachín in this part of Michoacán and in Jalisco.

Both are in luxurious bloom right now, following hard on the heels of the earlier-blooming but equally magnificent jacaranda.

  • Cristina, for some reason we do not have jacaranda that I noticed. Perhaps it is too warm? I saw on the news the fabulous display in Mexico City recently and wondered. We had them in Santa Barbara where I grew up and the streets would be carpeted in blue.

Steve, keep Mr Jiggs away from the seed pods, just in case he feels like chewing on something. They are poisonous. Beauty and the beast, together in one.

    Hi Jonna & Mimi,

Love your blog. Been reading it for several months. Please give me more photos of your house & pets. Are you hanging out in the pool?

  • Oh Yes! I am in the pool almost every afternoon on and off. In fact, tonight I was cooking and cleaning the kitchen and had to go and dive in at 10pm.

I’ll get some house and pet pics up soon. I’m working on a post about what works well and what doesn’t with the house design.
