It was before the government started the cartel cleanup ... at which time things got much worse before they got better. It is a gorgeous country too, with diverse terrain, just more compact than Mexico. But as a (past and) future resident of Mexico, of course it got my vote. Now, as they say, I'll "Vote Mexico and vote often!" I actually think Colombia would be interesting, it's on my list of places I'd like to go. They have cleaned up the violence, there are complaints about the process but it seems to be working.
